Jason Kingsley CBE, the Modern Knight, investigates the medieval world. We aim to research and test out what it was actually like for both ordinary people, Peasants and Townspeople, as well as the nobility like Knights and Lords. Jason owns and trains his own warhorses, Jousts competitively, fights in medieval armour and tests theories practically and sometimes to destruction. Mostly about the historical medieval in England, we occasionally venture into other aspects of history and occasionally fantasy like Lord of the Rings or Dungeons and Dragons. We are a historically researched factual channel useful to writers and gamers as well and people interested in historical documentaries.

In her new book - River Kings she talks about the huge leaps archaeolo...

Did the Middle Ages have paper?
So what did people use to wipe their bottoms after doing their 'business'?
im so glad we dont use piss to bleach clothes anymore lol
My guess at coarser meat would be referenced to Skyrim. As in, horse, dog, clam, goat or chicken?
Don't forget sugar was not a thing at that point in history especially for the poor. So, no sugar, very little tooth decay.
I feel like if you spoke in spanish, or at least a spanish accent, he would be more amenable.
Indentured servitude is slavery.
I'm too selfish and cheap. I would have hidden any fancy soap so no-one else would know for fear they would try to use it or steal it.
I don't see much difference between a serf and a slave. It seems an effort to try too play down the plight of the British slave equivalent. American slaves could similarly grow their own food, but also be fed, housed and clothed by their owners. Slavery was considered the norm throughout much of history and practiced by all races. Africans themselves owned slaves, they themselves, sold slaves and were found far further across their social spectrum, ie the lower classes could themselves own slaves.
I think you're projecting something onto this video that doesn't exist. I don't think this channel is playing anything down. I think, like all of their other videos, they are trying to be accurate. Slavery and how bad I was would vary from culture to culture and master to master, and many anglo saxons and britons were also enslaved. But I don't see why we have to compare these things in this victimhood olympics everyone seems to be obsessed with these days. Yes, almost everyone suffered all throughout history but that is not your suffering and whinging about it won't do you any favours. We used to be ashamed of these things and now we argue over whose ancestors were most oppressed. It's silly and unproductive. I think we should just let it all go and be grateful that we have better lives than those that came before us. Anyway, that's my whinging done for the day.
this is a lovely series

Good luck adventurers!
Very cool! I'd like to try that kind of saddle. Were Medieval saddles for everyday riding, for men, similar to this war saddle, or were they lighter, with less protection?
There are several types, but we see this sort being used for hunting as well as war.
I truly enjoyed this talk. Very informative and interesting! Thank you!
Fun fact: crystal glass is still somewhat considered a status symbol in the eastern block :)
I liked it!
... but let's assume the 5% proportion holds water. That's the reason you have champions. It's been argued that the Trojan War was largely fought with champions. The Mediaeval knights were to some extent champions, at least during the High Middle Ages. Their retinues were to some extent "support staffs" and trains, not expected to do any fighting. A twelve year-old page may be really good at polishing your armour, but you're perhaps not expecting him to leap into a pole-axe mêlée. A twelve year-old drummer boy in not going to lead a charge of the Die-hards in the early 19th Century. It's "good" to have the children there because they get desensitised for when they're older and are expected to do actual fighting. Also remember that for most of human history, most human beings have since childhood many, many times seen pigs, geese, cows, chickens, deer &c., &c. as well as, often other humans, killed off brutally, often only a few metres from them. A pig is not that much different from a human being: we are quite similar animals. If you yourself have killed off ten pigs for food, I'm sure killing a human being (in spite of religious doctrine, which in almost all cases is going to be OK with it anyway) is not going to feel as bad.
Toilet paper is going to be the most sought-after commodity after the apocalypse.
The Cro Magnon, Neanderthals and Denisovans shagged each others' brains out. That was the focus of their penetrative inter-specied relations, not shiving each other with pointy rocks. Lots of Half Elves (hybrids) about.
that's where the term "indentured servant" came from
What happens when you become Free? Do you have to leave the land you and your family have worked for generations? Since it belongs to the Lord, not you? How do you then make a living?
Very enjoyable, as well as informative. Ghost is a treat to watch. Manners maketh horse. 😍
Glad you enjoyed it!
The reason why they still had to force people into e.g the Navi was probably families. The families were dependent on their members and as a healthy jung adult leaving the family would probably be hard on them.
Are modern day people slaves? And is the modern economy effectively the same as slavery? 🤔
I'm impressed with that magnificent horse - besides being well-mannered and well-trained, he's beautiful.
I hope Ghost is doing well now and back to full strength. Really love this in depth insight. I love watching re-enactments and have a great respect and fascination for historically accurate re-enactment. I am conflicted about it becoming more of a popular spectator sport. I know jousting was always for show and entertainment. And perhaps for historical medical enthusiasts, seeing medieval injuries recreated might be of interest. I doubt modern doctors will be thrilled though. And given what we know about the dangers, and the unpredictable nature of the damage. Should we be recreating it for entertainment? Or at least, making sure that it's safe for everyone involved including the horses? I guess as a jouster yourself, you accept the risk and decide for yourself that you love doing it. I love your final message about wearing the right kit and coming away from a joust in good health and staying safe. Does more need to be done to ensure that level of safety and right kit? I see more events pushing bigger and spectacular jousting tournaments like something out of Game of Thrones. I just hope they're not compromising safety.
Sadly I think they are compromising safety.
I'm writing a novella with medievalesque outfits and armors. I wanted to say thanks for providing this, it was a very helpful visual aid
Glad it was helpful!

Medeval Europe was actually vary interesting. There was no ethnic hatred and distrust or fear among Europeans .
Being from america, im jelous of countries and regions that have so much history. My history starts when slaves were introduced smh. (No i dont identify with africa🙄).
There's a ton of pre European history in the Americas.
@@ModernKnight true. But I'm still on the fence on whether any of that history belongs to black people or not. People are claiming the original natives were black but that has yet to be proven.
I think it's better to reserve that word "slavery" for the more direct transactional thing because that's really what most people are refering to and trying to prevent in a contemporary context, yeah? If you break down power dynamics and the fact that life isn't fair, then you could justify calling anything a "slavery" state in some vague way because we all need to survive and compete when we would rather not.
Of course we know what it is. A coarser kind of meat for the poor: shoulder and butt, foreleg, tongue, jowls, neck, livers, kidneys, “sweetbreads”, tripe (stomach lining), oxtails, pigs feet. Whatever runs cheap… and it’s never tenderloin.
"The physics takes over". Such a true statement! Without practical testing, it's impossible to actually know exactly what will happen. Good to see you both working together!
What is that knotted tree to your right (our left) starting around 5:39? It’s got character!
Working in automotive and volunteering in various other bits of Victorian era mechanical engineering with lots of grease, oil and metal shavings we often use sand and any basic cheap hand soap if any of the modern fancy combination industrial grit/degreaser soaps have ran out or aren't available. It's surprising how much you can get off with just water and sand (at the expense of potentially blocking a modern sink)
I love your channel, always learning something new. Thank you!
Imagine being the master of the Piss Guild
Yes. And the average citizen of any nation is currently a slave.
if you look back , what would a modern day passport replace? what would be neede to move from place to place ?
we are still peasants, what do you think te P on your passport stands for
The native American people were very skilled at horseback archery. But they used much shorter bows.
Ahh so that’s why you “curry favour” with people
Before modern entertainment I bet most people got very practiced with cooking.
Ok this was brilliant
There's still today a street in Kazimierz, Kraków, Poland called "Kupa", which translates to Poo :D
The fly story is golden :D
11:00 Apparently small communal bath houses with a simple hot water system were quite common in medieval eastern Europe, even in remote and poor places.
So we work more days per week than people did back then? Huh?
